Expectant Parent Class - and Benadryl.

We spent last Saturday at St. Francis Hospital for our Expectant Parent Class! :)  It was from 8am-4pm - and wow, did we learn a lot.  Plus I got a back massage out of it!

Some highlights of the class were where we will go when we arrive at the hospital,  the # to call for car seat inspections (I already called today to setup our appointment in late June!), visiting hours (Alex and Jon can come up immediately after delivery - that should freak them out for awhile!) and what to pack (you should see the list - holy cow!  It's worse than my vacation packing list - and this is only for 2-4 nights!!).  I was excited to learn that I can 1) bring my own pillows and 2) bring a Glade plug-in so that it smells good in the room! :)  No candles though.  Something about 'open flames' - blah, blah, blah. :)

Something interesting they told us - 1:3 women have a c-section these days.  There were 12 of us in the class - so 4 of us will (statistically) have a c-section.  Weird to think about.  And funny part?  She asked how many of us *wanted* to have a c-section...and only 1 woman raised her hand.   I suppose I could go either way - I'm not particular. :)  Recovery is a lot longer with a c-section - so that is definitely on my mind.

Oh and hey - guess what?  Dehydration can cause cramps! :)  I had cramps about a month ago - called my doctor...and was so ticked off that the nurse said it was probably just cramps and drink lots of water.  Guess she was right. :)  However, our teacher also said to stop using the word "cramps"...basically, it's contractions.  Contractions = premature labor.  So by getting dehydrated?  You can cause contractions/premature labor!  So Derrick has been on me about water ever since Saturday. :)  He's such a good husband.

She also asked us at how many weeks is "ok" to have your baby.  Some people said 37, 38, 40...well, the correct answer is 39-40 weeks!   The baby is not really completely "ready" to go until then.  She said that the majority of babies in NICU at St. Francis are 35-38 week old *boys*.  (When someone asked why boys, she said girls are just the more superior sex :) - but actually, boys lungs develop slower - thus why more of them are in NICU when premature).   So!  I guess I'm holding out for July 23rd!   I was thinking a July 4th baby would be fun - but not if she's not ready! :)

Last tidbit - the epidural rate at St. Francis is 95-100%. :)  Guess I won't be getting out of that either.

Speaking of epidurals...one of the girls in our class completely passed out cold after hearing about epidurals / seeing the poster the nurse passed around of the needle going into the back.  It was so freaky!  I thought she was having a seizure!!  It was really scary.  I guess she has low blood pressure - and stuff like that just freaks her out.  They ended up admitting her - and she never came back to class!   Scary.

Oh!  And the nurse was saying that they hate that doctor's give you due dates...that they should really give you due *months*!  She said you could go 2 weeks before or 2 weeks after the due date...so my "range" is July 9th - August 6th. :)

We finished the day with a session on back massages (nice) - and she suggested our partner give us one at least once a day.  VERY nice! :)  We also practiced breathing and other relaxation techniques.  Lastly, we had a tour of the labor and delivery floor - that was an eye-opener.  I took pics of course - see below. :)  The rooms are nice - as nice as they get for a hospital room I guess. :) We did get to go by the nursery - and saw the cutest little baby in the window!  The nurse pulled his hat off and his hair stood straight up!   Then he spit up and proceeded to scream his head off.  :)   Guess he wanted to give us a true preview of what's to come!

You might be wondering what the Benadryl part of the title is...well, my feet have been itching SO bad for the past week.  Just the soles.  Bi-zarre!  I did read up on it a bit - and I guess it can be a symptom of pregnancy...something about bile and my liver. :)  They are really ok - unless I touch them or try to scratch them.  Then they itch like crazy - kind of like when you have a mosquito bite?  But there's nothing there!  No bite.  No rash.  Nothing.  Just itchiness!!  So my dear husband bought some Benadryl and rubbed it on my feet tonight.  In his Boy Scout shirt no less. :)  Not sure if it's going to help - but he's so stinkin' cute. :)

Breastfeeding class coming up on Thursday evening - and then 4D ultrasound on Saturday!  i can't wait to see Madison's precious little face! :)
